The Subconscious Mind: The Art of Visualization - WSLT#3

As a continuation of yesterday's reading, I have read about various other techniques to feed subconscious mind. 

I know I am too much into subconscious mind but what to do? The Power Of Your Subconscious Mind book is amazing. Can't wait to complete it.

The visualization Technique is an amazing technique. I have already tried it in Silva's method. If you visualize "what you want" or "which version of you", you want to be, then subconscious mind lead you to that point. 

What is this Visualization Technique?

As the name suggests, you have to visualize the state you want to be in. If you want to score high marks, you have to visualize yourself getting high marks.

Let me brief you on this. For example, you want to get a promotion in your company and always you dream about. You visualize yourself going into office. There everyone congrats you and you are not sure why. Your boss is coming to you and congratulating for your promotion. He is saying that you are well deserved  for that and telling you that it is already officially announced.

You feel very happy and search your mail and there you see the promotion letter with an awesome increment letter. You feel more happier that you call and inform your spouse and parents. They share their joy to you and congrats you. 

The Power of Visualization

Now think that you are in this visualization state for at least thrice a day(Standard visualization technique guru's usually ask us to practice thrice). Even before you get your promotion you set your mind that you are worthy of that promotion. I personally believe that first step in  each achievement starts with self belief that we can achieve. This visualization technique gives boost to that self belief.

The Best Advice I Ever Received

I  would like to share one conversation from my personal life. It was at the starting of my career. After an year of trainee post, I had to fill in my achievements and rate myself for some standard points set by my manager. 

I got one of the best seniors in the world and so I always bug them for any doubt. I asked one of the senior's advice on filling it since I was new  to these kind of self appraisals. I just asked him  what I can I fill? Should it be lengthy or short? How should I present the data? He explained me everything and at end, I asked him. 

Each points requires separate self rating. Since I was a trainee, for some of the points, I have barely worked. When I asked what can I rate of those points, whether a 3 out of 5 was good, he explained me what I took to my heart and following till now. 

He told me with a smile "Srini.. Everyone knows you are a Trainee and you cant contribute more on these points. But still they included these because they may want to know whether you did at least something on these and gained knowledge. It requires time and energy to master these areas. If you think what you did could be the greatest you can contribute to those points, then you have achieved 5 not 3. More over, if you don't rate yourself 5, how could your manager believe that you can work to satisfy the rating for 5?". These are one of the greatest advice I ever got. 

Why I wanted to share this story is to emphasize the importance of self belief. In the case we are discussing, one may be worthy enough to get a promotion, but even if he/she don't believe, how he/she can convince his/her boss to get it? 

But this technique is the best one  to boost our self confidence and belief to remove the fear in ourselves. You may start noticing the boost in confidence level if you keep on practicing this technique.

Also, this technique is one of the technique which can boost your morale  and happiness immediately. Now imagine how you feel after doing the visualization technique I described for promotion. Even though you haven't got your  promotion yet, every time you visualize you feel happy and the happiness is like disease(in a good way). It will not only spread to your professional life, but  it will spread in your personal space too.

My Personal Reflection

Personally, I always felt refreshing or happy after each time I tried this visualization technique. I cant explain that feeling. When I was in that state of visualization, picturizing myself achieving the goal I intend, I felt happy and I saw that after the practicing is over, the happiness spread to other areas of my life too. After the practice, I always went to a state of joy and always had a good, joking conversation with my family or friends in office.

My Tips for Overcoming Visualization Hurdles

At first, practicing this technique may be hard for  some people and it was very hard for me. Thanks to silva's books, I was able to get a hold of them. Do remember the rule of gymnastics, you cant achieve full bend in a single day. You work for it day by day and achieve it one day.

Since I was dump in this technique, may be I could give some pointers for total beginners. 

I was very poor in remembering tiny details. If  you cant even remember what some special features of others, surely you cant remember your features, because we see others more than us.

When I started, I wasn't able to get a hold of my face for visualizing it with joy. Since it should be a motion picture like a movie, I used to see my face in mirror for sometime before starting the technique. To make it more real, I have saved my best photo as a wallpaper and screensaver of my phone  to memorize it(What an irony trying to remember my own face). But within few days, I was able to remember my face and able to visualize it with accuracy. 

One more thing I did was, I started practicing it for 5 times a day. The more I practice, the more I was able to play the visualization as a vivid video. I wont tell I perfected it and I am still learning because whenever I want to set a new goal and change the video, I struggle but I get used to it now. 

There are already so many posts and books on how to do Visualization so  I don't plan to give detailed instructions on how to do it, but suggest to do whatever suits you and try to be relaxed as much as possible. So my advice is, if you are starting visualization technique, don't stop because you cant do it perfectly. The first belief you may have that you can do this may lead you to so many believes.
